METEOR/RESURS Imagery

Ralph E. Taggart WB8DQT

The Russian RESURS-01N spacecraft is the prototype of a new imaging satellite series based on the successful METEOR 3 series. Like the earlier METEOR series, RESURS visible-light images are extremely good at displaying the details of snow-covered landscapes in the arctic.

This is a late January image of the north-central US and south-central Canada. Ice-covered James Bay can be see in the upper right. Michigan is mostly covered by clouds but a bit of western Lake Michigan is visible right-center. Lake Superior is obscured by clouds, but ice-covered Lake Nipagon, with many small islands, can be seen to the north of Lake Superior. This image was received on an omni-directional Quadrifilar helix antenna, a Vanguard Wepix 200-B receiver, and the WSH Interface, running the new WSHFax Version 2.0 software. A RESURS full-resolution image subset can be viewed to show the high level of detail present in the pictures from these Russian spaceraft.
